Woman-kinds Greatest Invention (Miss De Jour Giveaway now closed.)

June 1, 2011 · 38 comments

In my experience there is one sure-fire way to clear a room of a men. Mention tampons, periods or any other thing vaguely reminiscent of ‘that time of the month’.  So let me warn you now this post is all about Tampons.  Yes Tampons.  Clearly, the tampon would have to be one of woman-kinds greatest inventions.    Ahem …… well actually a little research on the subject surprised me by revealing they were first invented by the ancient Egyptians (yes really) and then later re-invented by a man (gasps of horror) named Mr Haas in the late 1920s.  But thanks be to God a lovely lady by the name of  Gertrude Tendrich bought the patent and trademark in the 1930 and the life of the mass-produced tampon was born.  And here in ends todays history lesson.  But may I say, on behalf of all woman-kind,  a huge thank-you to you Gertrude.  Even though we don’t talk about it I think we’re all big fans of the tampon and consider it a must have item in our lives.

In the fabulous tradition of my new hero Gertrude, a young Aussie women (and mother to boot) has launched out and developed her own take on the tampon.  As you would know, if you read here regularly, I’m a huge supporter of women (especially young mums) who make things happen. Be it in business, innovation, volunteering or life generally. So I’m pleased to introduce to you the Miss De Jour range of beautifully packed and presented tampons.   Finally the tampon is getting the care and attention she deserves – Gertrude would be so happy.   One of the things I most like about the Miss De Jour range is that it says goodbye to the little tampon box which, as well as having now lost all of its spunk, also lets tampon escape to roll around the bottom of your handbag gathering lint and old soggy sultanas while waiting for the perfect opportunity to jump out and roll away.  The pretty pink zip locked bags Miss De Jour use are fresh, manageable and a much more suitable housing option for these little chick tampons.

With thanks to Miss De Jour and Blog Meets Brand I am in the lucky position of being able to giveaway to one lucky Truth About Mummy Reader an entire years supply of beautifully presented Miss De Jour tampons.  Now that’s an impressive giveaway.    To enter simply leave me a comment below telling me what you think is woman-kinds greatest invention.  If you share this post on facebook or twitter, using the sharing buttons below, please add another comment telling me where you have shared for a second and third entry.  This giveaway is open to all Australian residents (even a male – if he really wants to).  The giveaway closes on June 21st, 2011 and the winner will be announced here on June 22nd, 2011.  Please  make sure you leave a valid email address so you can be contacted in the event the winner is you.

Windscreen wipers for cars – male car designers didn’t think they were a necessity…. the first mechanical windshield wipers had to be operated by hand! Either the driver or a passenger had to work a crank to make the wipers go back and forth.
Mary Anderson, from New York City, was awarded a patent in 1903 for a window cleaning device. Once the invention was protected by patent, she tried to interest companies into producing the device. No one was interested, so Mary put the patent in a drawer and eventually it expired…..

Don’t forget rescue Annie!! Though technically invented by a man (I think), Annie was based on the face of a woman who was found in the River Seine. There was some question as to whether she jumped to her death due to a lost love. Either way, that woman’s face has saved a lot of lives 🙂

Best invention by a woman: Chocolate chip cookies. Need I say more. The best invention that a woman frequently uses: washing machine. I cannot fathom coping without it as women once did years ago!

Drugs taken orally cannot work for many medical conditions…

Letitia Geer invented the medical syringe.

Without it, so many infections and diseases would have spread further and/or remained untreatable and fatal.

The words women-kinds and invention actually made me think of Marie Curie. She must of been on stella lady accomplishing all she did in a mans world.
