Do you remember the old saying about insanity? It’s defined as ‘doing same thing over and over again and expecting different results’. Well hello housework, I think you fit the bill. We wash, we clean, we sweep, we put away and then we do it all again tomorrow …… and for every tomorrow until we finally train our kids to do it for themselves. (At least I hope that’s what finally happens!)
For the past three weeks I’ve been reviewing the Bissell AirRAM cord-free vacuum. You might have seen a photo or two pop up on your Instagram or Facebook feeds. I have to say there is nothing better to address that ‘head-banging sense of housework insanity’ than having something new and fun to tackle it with. Needless to say my floors have been looking at their tip-top best since the AirRAM arrived.
Without leaving you in any suspense I am going to tell you that after three weeks of owning this machine I love it. I’ve used it almost every day and haven’t dragged out my super-doopa vacuum cleaner once. It works from a rechargeable battery (much like a phone) which gives you around 40 minute of vacuum time. Fully charged I can make it around my four bedroom and two living area home with battery life to spare. And it’s just so convenient. I love being able to grab it on the spur of the moment to spot-clean crumbs and dirt as they happen.
But the convenience is not actually what I like best about the AirRAM. What has won me over the most is how effective it is. To prove the point below is a photo I took after using the AirRAM for the first time. I used it to clean my lounge room floor which, I kid you not, I had done the day before with my big ‘impressive’ vacuum. (I’m not sure if I should be impressed or embarrassed right now!) Regardless this machine does serious business when it comes to cleaning floors.
GOOD: Very effective. It pulls more dust, fluff and dirt off the floor than my larger vacuum cleaner and truly surprised me with how well it left my floors looking.
GOOD: Cordless. Easy. Convenient.
GOOD: Movability and handling are great. Swivels well in your hand and glides under anything higher than 10cms easily.
GOOD: It’s bag-less and very easy to remove the dirt tray and dump its contents into the bin.
GOOD: It has a nice close clean along the edges – capturing the little bits if dirt against the walls and furniture well.
FAIR: It stops without warning when the tray is full. (A warning beep might be nice – but not strictly necessary.) It won’t start-up again until the tray has been emptied.
FAIR: If you run out of charge mid-clean you’ll have to wait for it to re-charge. A full charge takes 4 hours but you can unplug it earlier and use it if needs be.
FAIR: You do have to clean the roller frequently to maintain its super effectiveness. Pulling bits of hair and string out of the brushes isn’t much fun but in my opinion worth the effort considering how well it cleans and how convenient it is.
FAIR: The RRP is $399 – although I’ve seen it on sale cheaper recently. For me the answer to whether it’s worth the price will be in its longevity. If it continues to run as well a it is for a good few years I’d be happy to pay this.
BAD: For something of this size it does produce a bit of noise. Which can get you in trouble when your family is watching TV!
THE TEST OF TIME: I’ll come back and update this in a few months.
SUMMARY: After three weeks I am loving my Bissell AirRAM. It’s super convenient and super effective. However I won’t be doing away with my big vacuum totally, as some days you really need the removable suction pipe. (Eg for cleaning skirting boards and sucking up spiders. Did I say that? No, I’d never do that to a poor spider!) In terms of making housework easier this is such a winner for me. The minor issues of noise and maintenance don’t dampen my enthusiasm as I love what it adds to my life in terms of convenience and effectiveness
