Sheds, Power tools & Father Day {+a toolbox giveaway 1/9} Congratulations Jenny

by Caz on August 17, 2012 · 200 comments

As a rule I don’t post much about shed stuff on here.  Well, lefts face it it’s not really that interesting  - unless I’m restoring furniture and I haven’t done much of that for a while.   The shed is the traditional domain of the Daddy – and in that respect we’re pretty traditional around here.   Our shed is not only the Man Cave but also the BMW bike house and the hub of our little home business.  But, as this ones all about Father’s Day I figured it was time to take some photos in the shed.   See this here – it’s a work bench!

In case you hadn’t worked it out yet it’s Father Day on the 2nd of September.  Time to start thinking about things that make the big boy of the house happy.  For us that often involves a long drive in the car down a series of  dirt roads with lots of sticky brown mud flying around.      We took one of our first such drives almost eight years ago when Big Girl Pink was only a few months old.    It’s still the source of a little bit much laughter around here that my mummy instincts freaked out at the bottom of a muddy hillside track and I jumped out of the car, unbuckled bubs and refused to get back in.   It’s okay though – I’m sure the walk did me good.

This year Father’s Day came a little early around here when we got sent some shed stuff to check out as potential Father’s Day  pressies. (Suddenly all that time I spend on the computer isn’t such a bad idea – hey Daddy!)

First up let me introduce you to  the Dremel Saw-Max which  they say can cut through virtually any material including wood, plastic, metal, fibreglass, plasterboard, brick and tile.  (Hmmmm  might come in handy next time I’m making pumpkin soup!  Some of those pumpkins are pretty tough you know.)    It actually has heaps of other interesting sounding feature, but I think I’ll just let you follow the link above to find out more – in case I totally embarrass myself with my lack of power tool type knowledge.  This one would be a great gift idea for the home handy Dad or the Dad who just likes to chop stuff up!

And secondly the Trojan Top Ten Tool Box.   Basically this is a tool box  that comes  complete with the top ten Trojan Tools inside.  Awesomely clever gift idea for pretty much anyone – but I’m guessing particularly the dad of the house.   Hammers, screw drivers, tape  measures, wrenches …… think of a tool  and it will probably be there.  It’s the type of kit we should probably all have hidden away for home maintenance  jobs but also the type of thing that would make any self-respecting Tim the Tool Man types heart beat a little faster. The resident daddy at out place certainly looked pretty pleased as he checkout his new tools!

The nice guys over at Trojan have provided me with one Top Ten Tool Box to giveaway to help make someones father day just a little extra special this year.   The giveaway ends at midnight on the 1st of September – so you’ll be able to tell Dad on the day.  Follow these steps to enter:

  1. Leave a comment below sharing an idea for something different to surprise dad with on father day this year.
  2. If you are nice enough to share this giveaway on facebook or twitter please feel free to leave a second entry comment.
  3. Follow The Truth About Mummy in any way you like (facebook, twitter, email or reader feed)
  4. Please leave an email address (where requested) that you check regularly – as giveaways are redrawn if you don’t respond within 4 days.
  • Giveaway is open until Midnight on the 1 September, 2012  and has a total value of approx $140.
  • (Check the T&C tab for full T&C).
  • Disclaimer: All opinions are my own. I  received a review copy of both items but no financial compensation for writing this post. .

We call Bunnings “Grumps Church” at our place. So I would take him to his Church, buy him a sausage (with onion) aka “One with the lot”, plus a soft drink and then let him loose in the big shiny shop/shed and say, “Buy whatever you want”….

My son and I made a homemade gift this year as we’ve been sick and not been able to get to the shops. We made a collage out of his Kindy paintings then cut out his hand prints in a contrasting colour and glued it in the middle. We then put gold and silver star stickers on the fingers and I wrote a personalised Fathers Day message on the palms. It actually looks really good, I was pleasantly surprised!

Because the kids don’t have actual money to spend, they like to make up a book of vouchers for Dad, which he can exchange for things like…. breakfast in bed, a car wash, one whole hour of uninterupted TV time, or a sleep in! The kids have fun making up new voucher offers, and Dad thinks he’s getting something special too.

The best gift for Dad is to ask him what he wants to do on Father’s day.
Dad might not want to be woken up at the crack of dawn for breakfast and presents in bed. Dad might not want to be dragged out to a busy restaurant, although any other day of the week it’s his favourite restaurant.
Simply ask your Dad what he wants to do and I’m sure that would be a nice surprise for him.

Dad’s always doing lots for us.
On footy trips he drives the bus.
From coaching netball and basketball teams.
To singing recitals where some girls scream.
A gift I’d give from all of us.
Would need to be simple cause Dad hates a fuss.
No need for money, or trips away.
Just a day for him would be what he’d say.
A day to do whatever he please.
Because to us he’s the Bee’s knees!

Fathers day is going to be a bit like Mothers day, our only son is off doing his basic Army training. The house is too quite, and things haven’t worked out to plan, with son having injuries setting him back. Never having a sick day in his life and barely been to a doctor it’s worried us no end. Some tools to keep his mind busy with the many jobs out in the shed and around the house would be a godsend. Sending happy thoughts to all of those parents not seeing the kids on Fathers Day, never complain about the socks, jocks and homemade gifts, you will miss them when they are gone..

If I had unlimited funds or owned a money tree – for fathers day my husband would be getting a caravan to travel Australia or a shed (so he can practise being handy) or the drop saw he has been day dreaming about for months (I think thats what it is called) – This one is more achievable but not anytime soon.
However seeming as I don’t have loads of cash or that money tree it will be more likely that he will be receiving a bunnings gift card or a new torch and a bunch of helium balloons.

And has not bought himself anything decent to show
A new bed is something he needs and cant afford to buy
And I bet if I could somehow get one for him he would surely cry
My hubby on the other hand does not get “bought” presents from the kids and I
As being a stay home mum means we make him something and this year it will be a homemade apple pie :)

we have brought our kids up to appreciate the simple things in life we both got more joy out of what our kids made at school for mothers day and fathers day so that’s how we kept it. Being separated Id like for me and my boys to show how much we do appreciate what a good father he is. No matter what the present, he has always kept anything the boys have given him over the years it would be nice to make this one extra special.

My daughter has been practicing riding her bike without the training wheels. So this year my hubby will get a fantastic special Fathers Day surprise when she shows him on the day, that she can ride without training wheels.

He may have something special from the fathers day stall at school too.

It’s not a different idea in general, but I plan to surprise my husband for fathers day by letting him sleep in. This is “different” for us because he always gets up for the kids in the morning and lets me catch up on sleep so I can handle them waking up during the night!

I’m trying to whip up an armchair remote caddy for hubs this year, to go along with the detailing on his car (professionally done, not from me and the kids like normal lol).

Given no money limits i’d love to send him on a holiday to England to visit his mate who has just gone over for a 2 year working holiday.

And then a big breakfast followed by a box full of little goodies that he loves, like chocolate and tools! I’d take the family out so he could have a big afternoon nap as well, to recharge!

What a difficult question you pose. For my Dad I think the best surprise would be to have the whole family around him on Father’s Day. This never happens on any particular day in our busy and around Australia family. Now that he’s getting older, I think he’s like to see us all together like when we were his babies :)

Like most fathers my father taught me to ride a bike when I was a child. Instead of hopping in the car for a Father’s Day activity, I’ve decided we will go on a beautiful bike ride and rekindle those memories and bonds formed long ago. We’ll ride down some of my favourite streets and stop for lunch at the “Dairy Queen”, a milk bar – take away shop that has been in the area since my childhood. Dad used to take me regularly for the best toasted sandwiches in Melbourne. We are both a lot older now so it will have to be slowly paced but what better way to spend Father’s Day than partaking in one of Australia’s favourite pastimes.

For all those Dads who spend heaps of time in the shed, then get totally frustrated because his little project isn’t working out too well, I’ve got the perfect pressie …. it’s a Solar Tide Watch, a watch solar powered (no electricity needed here), 100m water resistance (in case he has dropsy), and has tide predictions (so he can just go off and fish and relax, and out of my hair). That’s my idea for Fathers day.
