One thing I’m a little on the passionate side about is sharing my love of reading books with my girls. From a very early age I’ve been laying on the floor reading books to all three of them – hoping the love of words and stories would seep into their souls. My eldest is now in grade two and has really started to engage with her school reading. For a while now I’ve been keeping and eye out for some good age appropriate books that she can start to read for pleasure. Then a few weeks ago I had a conversation with the team from Hardie Grant Egmont at the Digital Parents Conference and they sent me home with Sink or Swim from the GO GIRLs series written by Thalia Kalkipsakis. I’m so glad they did because the magic reading bug has now burrowed deep down into my daughter’s heart where I think it will live happily for a very long time to come.
A Kidz Book Review by Cate.
Hi my name is Cate. I am seven years old and I have just read one of the best books. It took me two and a half days to read it. Go Girls are good books, or should I say great books. I love reading books. Bec, (who is the main character) did learn that swimming is not about winning – it’s about having fun. I read it every night because I really wanted to know what was going on. My favourite character was of course Bec. Her friends were named Holly, Ruby and Georgia. I liked how if one of them didn’t win they would still say congratulations. What a great review, Cate. We have special “family time” each night, where the girls get to choose three books to read before bed. We also have weekly visits to the library. I love books. x

I love it when after having read a book a few times to my sons, they start to remember the words- and know what is going to be said before it is said! The excitement on their little faces is the best thing of all about reading.

I love how no matter how you feel and what your going through in your life you can totally escape for a few hours and be a ghost lost in somebody elses life or world. Whenever I’m down I’ll go on a reading binge and once i’m done reading I feel relaxed, energised and ready to face the world again.
I remember as a kid reading under the bed covers with a torch after lights out. My mother would come and catch me and I would get in trouble! Would any mother these days tell their kid to stop reading? What a changed world we live in!!

I love that when you read you can have some time out from the every day stuff. My daughter is learning to read. She was struggling but just had her eyes tested and when her glasses arrive in a couple of weeks I’m hoping she’ll have lots of fun reading. Great review!

I enjoy “living” the book when I read, being so deeply immersed in the novel that I become part of it. It’s a life that I would never live normally and enjoy seeing it from the sidelines, so to speak.
Reading is the ultimate escape. Through reading I have traveled the world, explored the galaxy, gone back in history & seen the future.

One of my hobbies as a child was to read. The first book I ever recall reading was “Dr. Suess – green eggs & ham”. What excites me is that book is my 6yr old sons favourite book now. Although he has autism & trouble with verbal expression he shares my passion of reading, which in turn is greatly increasing his vocabulary.
Well done Cate – that’s such a lovely review. I love reading because it means you always have something to do. If you have a book on the go you’re always entertained.
My late Grandma taught me that reading opens the heart and eyes to endless possiblities! She taught me that reading was so important because with a great book you can go anywhere (through the story line!)
Love that your daughter is reading a book. Our youngest son is six and has no interest in books….yet our 16 year old will read books all day long!

My seven yr-old daughter is an avid reader (just like her mum!) so she would love this book!
My favourite thing about reading is how it can take me to places far and wide and I can come to know (and form feelings for) characters without even leaving my reading place! I get lost in the pages, the locations, the storylines… I experience a whole range of emotions just from reading. I also love the bond I create with my children when I read to them (and Rey love when I put on “voices” for the characters. I love books!!!!!
Proud mum moment for sure!
One of my best memories as a kid was my dad reading to me before bed. He would light a candle, and me and my little sister would get a chapter a night of The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. It created such a love for books and I would invite my little sis in to my bed and I would read to her too. Then as I got older I would always treasure the moment I got a new book off my parents as a birthday or chrissy pressie cause I always took it as a great compliment when the books became harder and more insightful and my dad would ask me what I thought of it. It always came with a beautiful message inside the front cover like I was meant to read this book. No better way to spend time with your kids
